It's important to note that the FDA approves the technology or instruments, not the refractive procedure. The FDA approved the Technolas Excimer Workstation (a laser workstation), and there are now 25 leading specialized astigmatism treatment centers that have adopted the technology.

What ACE does
ACE allows the excimer laser to pinpoint the exact orientation of the eye throughout the entire LASIK procedure, which decreases the chances of over or under correction that may occur due to eye movement. Because the eye moves incrementally during most refractive surgery procedures, it's important to track these movements in order to obtain the best level of correction and the most exact match to the eye's prescription.

With astigmatism, there is even more of a chance of over or under correction due to eye rotation, resulting in the need for further enhancement later on.
