A technology that was created by physicians and scientists at the University of Rochester has helped to improve the eyesight of patients to unprecedented levels will now be made more widely available for Lasik laser surgery thanks to FDA approval. The technology is called the Rochester Nomogram, and it marks a big leap forward for Lasik patients. With Nomogram, 99.3% of the surgeries result in 20/20 vision or better.

This is the best success rate ever observed. A company called Technolas Perfect Vision has licensed the technology from the University for its refractive surgery system, and it is currently the only company that is offering the Nomogram technology. The process to develop this technology goes back nearly 20 years at the University, where scientists and physicians have specialized in doing groundbreaking research to study and improve human vision.

Dr. Dishler has been one of the pioneers of Lasik technology and has performed over 51000 lasik and other vision correction surgeries in the last 15 years. Lasik laser surgery has been around for years. It is used to correct astigmatism, hyperopia, and myopia by changing the shape of the cornea. One step in the lasik operation involved cutting a flap in the front of the cornea with an oscillating blade, but today that is also done with a new Femto laser.

This new laser method does not cause as much trauma to the eye, because the cut is smooth and precise, and it heals much faster then before. In the last ten years almost fifteen million lasik surgeries have been performed in the US. According to research firm Market Scope LLC, 95.4% of those patients have said that they are satisfied with the procedure. However, over those ten years there have been improvements made in the surgical process, like the Femto laser, so new data is needed to draw conclusions about the patient satisfaction rates today.
